Start with the range map
List each product variant, its pack size and whether it shares the same pouch shape. Then mark the information that must change, such as product name, flavour or ingredient callouts, barcode, date-code area, language and net weight. This gives design, purchasing and production teams one working brief.
| Plan once for the range | Confirm per SKU | Why it belongs in the first brief |
|---|---|---|
| Pouch format, opening route, base artwork zones and brand hierarchy | Product name, variant colour, pack weight, barcode and regulated information supplied by the brand | It prevents a later SKU from competing with the zipper, tear area, seals or required information space. |
| Print finish direction and the desired level of visual consistency | Number of designs, quantity per design and expected reorder pattern | These inputs let the supplier discuss the printing route and production setup without inventing a fixed break-even point. |
| Where date coding may be needed | The code format, location constraints and who supplies the final data | The artwork team can reserve a workable zone instead of adding it after the front panel is finished. |
Ask the right printing question
Do not ask only for the total quantity across the range. State the total quantity, the number of designs and the quantity expected for each design. Also explain whether the range will reorder as a stable family or whether some SKUs are being tested. That information changes the commercial discussion around printing route, setup and inventory risk.
Build the artwork handoff in three passes
- 01
Pack geometry first
Confirm the pouch format, approximate dimensions, opening route and feature positions before treating every panel as available artwork space.
- 02
Shared system second
Set brand elements and common information areas so the family reads consistently without making each SKU identical.
- 03
SKU files and operational zones last
Check the individual artwork files against barcodes, date-code areas and any product-specific information supplied by the brand.
Use the pouch-size quote guide when the pack is still taking shape. A 3-side-seal pouch can have different front and back panel constraints from a stand-up pouch, so format and artwork should travel together.
Brief a pet treat packaging range
Share the number of SKUs, target pack formats, quantity per design, artwork stage and any barcode or date-code requirements.
